The Body Positive - Body Image Course

Today, young people are growing up surrounded by increasingly unattainable beauty standards. Body Image issues affects nearly all young people, undermining their confidence and diverting their energy into attempts to meet today's often impossible body ideals. This course can help students understand how culture impacts them and their feelings about themselves. Innovative materials like these offer adults the chance to be positive role models, and to make a significant positive impact on the self-esteem of young people when they need it most.

The Body Positive course provides an impressive combination of fun exercises and communication tools that encourage conversation on an exceedingly difficult subject: body confidence and self-esteem. We don't believe that it is acceptable for society's attitude towards beauty to stop young people from fulfilling their potential and enjoying their lives. By using a combination of powerful first-hand accounts, psychology and media literacy, we are inspiring students by making them aware of all factors that affect body image and self-esteem so they can be empowered to achieve their full potential.

Why Do You Need This Course?

Consultation was undertaken with children, parents and other agencies, consisting of questionnaires, attendance at school council meetings, parents evenings and multi agency meetings. The results showed that body issues can affect children as young as 8 and 9 years old. In our local primary schools, we found the following:

  • Girls self esteem peaks when they are 9 years old

  • 80% of children who are 10 years old are afraid of being fat

  • Obese boys and girls have significantly lower self-esteem than their non-obese peers

  • 80% of 10 year old girls have dieted already

  • By 11 years old, children's number one worry is their relationship with their body

As a result we have aimed this course at 10/11 year olds as a transition project to forearm children before they reach secondary school. We believe that it is crucial that the subject of Body Image is taught at primary school level because as children get older the research gets even more worrying:

  • More than 90% of girls aged 15 to 17 years want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance, with body weight ranking the highest

  • Up to 12% of teen boys are using unproven supplements and/or steroids

  • Nearly a quarter of girls age 15-17 would consider undergoing plastic surgery

  • 13% of girls aged 15-17 acknowledge having an eating disorder

  • 7 in 10 girls believe they are not good enough or do not measure up in some way

  • The top wish among all girls is for their parents to communicate better with them

  • 70% of teenagers don't like what they see in the mirror

  • Half of all anorexic girls are aged between 13 and 19

This makes for some disturbing reading and highlights the necessity of teaching Body Image and Self-Esteem in Primary Schools

PHSE Expectations

The Government expects Body Image and Self-Esteem to be taught during PHSE sessions but our schools are failing as no one is an expert and there are very few resources available to schools on the subject. The Body Positive course was written by 3 experts in their individual fields, combining their personal experiences into one comprehensive course consisting of 6 x 1 hour workshops to be run over 6 weeks, aimed at year 6.  The authors include a Practicing Psychologist who has overcome Anorexia Nervosa, a World Class Female Natural Body Builder with body dysmorphia and a well known Martial Arts Instructor who yo-yo diets for competition.
